New Season Begins on December 31

Don't forget that the new season of Outdoor Quest TV starts on December 31 and we are kicking off yet another phenomenal season with a great hunt....Sandy will be tackling the Alberta Rockies in search of a bighorn ram.

New Mounts on the Wall

We got the last of our New Zealand mounts back from Curtis at Silver Willow Taxidermy and finally got them hung up....man do they look awesome. Our Argentina trophies are supposed to arrive over Christmas so really excited about that as well. There should be a few interesting challenges there for Curtis.

Hunting Heroes

Just got home from a great hunt in eastern Alberta for whitetails. Vanessa and I were running cameras on a hunt organized by the Outaouais Chapter of Safari Club International Canada that saw two Canadian soldiers hunting. Both were wounded in Afganistan and man did we have a lot of laughs and hunted our butts off. Brock took a nice buck on the final morning and Chris came oh so close to getting it done as well. I really hope to share some time in the field again soon with these new-found friends. Watch for the story of the hunt in Alberta Outdoorsmen and on Outdoor Quest TV.

Sandi's moose

We finally got out for a little down time and moose hunting. After 4 days of calling, hiking and glassing we found a bull that Sandi was excited to shoot and she made good with her RMR in .338WM. Lots of fun and humor in this upcoming episode of Outdoor Quest TV!

Elk Success!

In what turned out to be a grueling test of equipment and endurance Sandi finally came out on top. We all thought that Sandi's 108 elk tag would be a quick opening day hunt. The only determining factor was just how big she was going to hold out for. We soon learned that access was critical and the herds were down in numbers with the bulls scarce and small. Sandi turned down bull after bull as the miles on the boots kept mounting. By the time we watched this bull (the largest we saw during the hunt) take the herd away from his predecessor we were over 70 miles and counting! In a very unfair gear test Sandi had unwrapped her new Lowa boots that last morning in the hotel room. They had arrived the day we left for the latest sojourn and she had no time to break them in. I convinced her to give them a try just for the morning hike which was planned to be less than two miles. By the time we stumbled our way back to the truck in the blazing light of our Genesis head lamps she had put 13 miles on the boots. Her feet felt great she said as compared to the rest of her that was dragging - badly!
Another big thumbs up to the X-Bionic Energy Accumulator shirts we wore through out the hunt. The shirts are designed to slow fluid loss and maintain energy levels. With daytime temps pushing 30 C we pushed the claims to the limit and were amazed at how well the shirts worked. Add to that the fact that the shirts never held body odor and it was a perfect application. I could have done with some other color than black in all that heat though! This was a real test of gear not a hundred yard stumble from the electric golf cart to the tree stand.
Sandi made a perfect 400 yard heart shot with her RMR 7/08 AI and the rest you will have to watch the show for!

Day 3

Today we saw two different herds of elk and made a long stalk on the one this morning and another this evening. This hunt has been hard on the shoe leather. We have walked over 40 miles to this point. The second herd we found just before dark has a good herd bull in it. We put him to bed about 200 yards on land we don't have access on. Hopefully in the morning we can pull on to land we have permission on. Last day tomorrow!.

Sandi's elk hunt

Day 2 is over and we never saw an elk today. Yesterday we found a herd of about thirty the herd bull is a very pretty fellow of about 320 B&C. Sandi decided that wasn't big enough for opening dy on a tag she took 11 years to draw. The herds of bachelor bulls have disappeared over the last three days as the rut starts.

The Puma SGB Featherweight

I just have to comment on this little gem of a knife. I took the Model 25 or 2.5" model on Sandi's ram hunt for caping and deboning. I didn't take anything to sharpen it with to save weight. I didn't regret either decision as the little knife performed mightily caping and deboning the ram with ease. It is still nice and sharp and ready for the next trip. At about 20 bucks retail this is one thrifty piece of gear I won't be with out.

Sandi's opening day ram!

In a fitting end to a grueling journey of many years Sandi fulfilled her quest for a bighorn ram at 7:14 on opener morning. The tale is a long one that will take some telling and will make a fabulous TV show for the 2013 Outdoor Quest series. For now I'll let the pictures tell the story of the grit and determination this little lady had to enter the exclusive club of successful bighorn ram hunters. Congrats Babe!

RAM DOWN!!!!!!

Just heard from my mom   she knocked down a nice ram at 730 this morning and are just now going to start heading back to camp for the long pack out

just heard from ma and pa
they are sitting in base camp hiding from the rain and snow but enjoying the view of the rams from the tent door
they have been following two legal rams today one old warrior and one younger mature ram they spotted them yesterday and have been keeping tabs on them since then   
moms quite eager to draw the cross hairs on either of them come first light tomorrow

Rams Spotted

Just talked to Rich on the cell phone and they've got 4 rams spotted and two are legal. It's going to be a long wait for Saturday morning. Sandi is first up and I'll keep you posted!

New Sheep Hunting Gear

Timing is everything and all the new gear we ordered for the trip to the Yukon showed up today...whoo hoo! New Lowa Hunter Extremes, 10x42 Conquest HD binos and an X-Bionic shirt for both Vanessa and I. Look out Yukon here we come! I can't wait to test this gear out. We'll give you a full report.

August Long Weekend

We got out for our tradituional three day hike on the August long weekend and despite temperatures in the 30s, we still managed to cover about 50 kms. It was new country for all of us and we had a great time exploring it. Vanessa and I hiked up to an absolutely beautiful lake one day. I'm sure we were the first people to visit it this year. It's amazing that places like this still exist so close to Calgary. We spotted a band of rams high in the rocks and despite the heat waves, we could tell three were legal. It was great to find some new ram country. It was a great weekend shared with some good friends and a couple of canine companions.

Home from Huntfest

Despite a few hiccups, including a 4 1/2 hour building evacuation because of an ammonia leak, Huntfest was pretty good overall. Got the chance to chat with lots of fans of the show, Rich and I did seminars everyday, I picked up my new .338 RMR rifle from the boys at Corlanes and Vanessa got her one of a kind green and pink Tikka. I checked out some cool new flashlights and headlamps as well as some new boots from Lowa. And of course I picked up my marco polo from Curtis at Silver Willow Taxidermy. It looks so incredible. I also got my Tahr and Chamois and Vanessa got her fallow buck. Glad to see everyone there!
