Argo Time

Brrrr! Yesterday dawned clear and cold -40 here but I loaded up the Avenger and headed into see Doug Lambley at Argyll Motor Sports In Edmonton. It was time for a check up and nobody takes care of us and our Argos like Doug. While there I got a sneak peak at the new 2009 model and new for this year is Realtree HD Camo.

A few more SCI photos

Here's a few photos of day 1 at the SCI convention in Reno. We spent most of the day checking out taxidermy and seminars plus we got to meet up with our African outfitter and ask him a million questions. Three more days of the show left! Hopefully we'll get to check out some New Zealand outfitters tomorrow.

Range time....and some firewood too

It's hard to believe but we leave for Africa in just a little over two months and with both Vanessa and I taking new guns, getting in some range time is critical. Vanessa's Tikka T3 .30-06 is shooting like a champ and we got it dialed in for 250 yards yesterday and then she did some practice off the sticks. I'm still tinkering with bullets for my Kimber .338 but am close to settling on a load. We shot both rifles over the chrony and then ran the numbers through the ballistic program so we are well prepared for shots in the 100-300 yard range.

We also took the time to cut a half a truck load of wood for the fireplace before heading back to the edit suite to work on episone #9. We've been getting great feedback from our Wild TV viewers and it seems everyone is axious to see more real hunting for the team here at Outdoor Quest TV.

Wood Day!

With the weather finally above zero the lure of the woods was too much so Sandi and I loaded up the old brown dog and the chainsaw and headed out for some birch firewood. The snow was too deep at our usual spot so we cruised until we found some that was accessible. It wasn't big nor plentiful but in an hour we had enough of a jag to have made the trip worth while. On the way out I commented that with the weight on and the new tires I bet I could go good in the deep snow. Believing my own theory I pushed the big Ford down the next snow covered road and we did go good, real good and got all the way to stuck. The 15,000 lb Ramsey winch made short work of the task and as we were driving away Sandi asked me what I was smiling about. I replied that it had been a good while since I had made a dumb decision that lead to getting stuck, so long that my M.A.N. card was in danger of expiring! LOL

We had a great day I and I hope some of you got the chance to enjoy the outdoors today too!.

US Gun Sales Continue to Increase

24 Percent Jump in December Amid Gun-Owner Concerns
NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Despite a weak economy, gun sales are continuing to increase amid concerns that incoming lawmakers will institute a new gun ban on law-abiding Americans. Data derived from the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) show a 24 percent increase in firearm purchaser background checks for the month of December 2008 (1,523,426 checks) over December 2007 (1,230,525 checks). This increase follows a 42 percent rise in NICS checks for the preceding month, the highest number of checks in NICS history. FBI background checks are required under federal law for all individuals purchasing firearms from federally licensed retailers. These checks serve as a strong indicator of actual sales.
A recent poll of hunters and target shooters by Southwick Associates Inc., in which 80 percent of respondents said they expect it will become more difficult to purchase firearms under the incoming administration and congress, explains the increase in sales.
"Sales of firearms, in particular handguns and semi-automatic hunting and target rifles, are fast outpacing inventory," said NSSF President and CEO Stephen L. Sanetti. "It's clear that many people are concerned about possible gun bans under the incoming Congress and are reacting accordingly."
According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the large increase in demand for firearms has led to a shortage of Form 4473s -- the Firearms Transaction Record which must be filled out any time a person buys a firearm from a licensed retailer. As a temporary measure, ATF is allowing FFLs to photocopy the form 4473 in its entirety until they receive their orders from the ATF Distribution Center. NSSF has reminded retailers of the newly launched Electronic Form 4473 which is free and downloadable from the ATF Web site.
Final year-end NICS data reveals a total of 12,709,023 background checks reported in 2008, up 14 percent from 2007.

Range Day Tomorrow

With a new Tikka T3 Lite .30-06 under the tree for Vanessa and a self indulgent Christmas present to myself of a Kimber 8400 Montana in .338WM we've been anxious to get out and do some shooting. Temperatures near freezing tomorrow are just the break we've been looking for. If all goes according to plan, these will be the two guns we take to Africa in April. I'll let you know how they shoot.

New Broadcast Season Starts

-37 degrees this morning on the thermometer outside my office window. The fireplace is blazing cheerily and the coffee is hot, it is one of those days where it is pretty easy to sit in front of the computer and work , at least while it is still dark out.
Tomorrow, Sunday January third at 8 pm will be the first airing of the 2009 broadcast season on Wild TV. I'd like to invite you to tune and catch the first of a schedule we are very proud of. TJ, Vanessa, Sandi, I and all our Pro Staff have worked very hard to turn this out and we'd love to hear your feedback!
